One thing you did not mention as an underlying cause of this change is that the online platforms have significantly improved their (our) ability to manage misinformation, disinformation and hate speech. Over the past few years, companies like meta and Google have invested tremendous time, energy and money to ensure that Myanmar, Cambridge Analytica and other tragedies do not occur again. As an industry we are still far from perfect, but continue to develop ever more sophisticated ways to prevent inadvertent amplification of misinformation.
